Randolph J. Huis
Overview
Randy helps clients protect, evaluate, and enforce intellectual property in mechanical, electromechanical, automotive, aircraft, manufacturing, and consumer-product technologies. Clients rely on him for patent prosecution, patentability and infringement counseling, patent validity analysis, design patents, licensing, and litigation involving patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
As a former design engineer and registered professional engineer, Randy understands the practical path from technical concept to protectable intellectual property. He works with inventors, in-house counsel, and management teams to assess design concepts, evaluate patentability and infringement risk, and identify design-around options before clients commit to tooling, launch, or other major business costs.
Randy prepares and prosecutes provisional, non-provisional, and design patent applications, with timing shaped by competitive activity, market needs, product development, and business strategy. During prosecution, he guides clients through examination before the USPTO and helps align patent protection with commercial objectives.
When intellectual property disputes arise, Randy represents clients in federal court litigation, arbitration, and licensing negotiations. He has litigated patent, trademark, and copyright matters, including asserting patents against infringers, obtaining damage awards and injunctions, and defending clients against infringement claims. He also regularly works with clients in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria on U.S. intellectual property matters involving patent prosecution and litigation.
Previous Work and Industry Experience
Before practicing law, Randy worked as a design engineer at Boeing on helicopters and V/STOL aircraft, including the Chinook, Sea Knight, and V-22 Osprey. He also has hands-on experience with automotive engines, transmissions, and auto restoration.
Life Beyond Law
Randy is always interested in learning something new, which makes working with inventors on protecting new technology more than just a job. He enjoys woodworking and has restored classic cars.
