Joshua D. Schmid
Josh is a patent attorney who meets his client’s questions with pragmatic and succinct advice. Drawing from experience in domestic and international patent procurement, he provides counsel in a wide range of engagements including due diligence, acquisitions, freedom-to-operate investigations, and portfolio mining. Josh also assists in contentious matters, crafting arguments to defend his clients’ interests during licensing campaigns and post-grant proceedings. He has advised clients on proposed patent legislation and has participated in lobbying efforts at the state and federal levels.
Josh’s technical expertise lies primarily in the electrical and computer engineering fields. He is particularly familiar with and deals extensively in 3GPP and IEEE-standardized wireless technologies. His repertoire also includes video codecs, artificial intelligence, smart vehicles, electronic warfare, satellite-based communication and positioning systems, medical devices, and semiconductor design.
Previous Work and Industry Experience
Previously, Josh worked as a senior technician for a New Jersey-based civil engineering firm, where he provided construction defect remediation and forensic consulting services. He also has experience in the information sciences, having provided spatial data gathering and analytics support for several large-scale military development projects through Rowan University’s Geospatial Research Laboratory.
During law school, Josh served as Executive Editor of the Villanova Environmental Law Journal and co-president of Villanova University’s Asian Pacific-American Law Student Association. As student attorneys in the Villanova Clinic for Law and Entrepreneurship, Josh and his partner earned recognition for their pro bono representation of a Philadelphia-based non-profit.
Life Beyond Law
Josh finds learning hand-on skills to be a gratifying experience and tries to keep himself enrolled in at least one vocational or technical course. Whenever he has the opportunity, he enjoys motorsports and outdoor adventures with life-long friends.
